Million dollar waterfront estates and opulent apartment buildings are the touchstones, but there is nothing ostentatious about the area, instead, the sense is that of community, urban dwelling, and local loyalty.

Ortega

Historic Ortega lies on the St. Johns River just south of the historic Riverside area. Ortega is bordered by the St. Johns River on the East, the Cedar River on the North, and the Ortega River on the West, practically making it an “inland island.”

Ortega is home to hundreds of mid-size to large, turn-of-the-century homes and Southern Style estates and mansions. Many of these homes are located directly on the river, and the nature of the land allows easy access to the waterways for all residents.

Ortega is distinct by a noticeable traditional Southern culture. Ortega is almost exclusively residential, with the exception of a small square in the area known as “Old Ortega” located on the northside which includes a small number of restaurants, boutiques, and a pharmacy. Ortega is recognized by its large oaks, waterfront mansions, and numerous parks and is considered one of the most splendid residential areas in Northeast Florida.

Jacksonville’s Naval Air Station is located on the southside of Ortega.
